Marmite - Brewers Yeast

Marmite is very popular in England but it is only available at specialty food stores in the US. Many Canadian supermarkets stock it but most Canadians are unaware of it. I don’t know what the situation is in Australia or New Zealand but they probably barbecue it somehow.

Marmite is a spread made from Brewers Yeast that you usually put on toast or bread and butter. It is delicious and good for you but it is very strong and many people make the mistake of spreading it like jam. Spread it THINLY.

It is completely vegetarian friendly and contains all kinds of good stuff like thiamin and riboflavin, niacin, folic acid and B vitamins. Read more…

Recipe for Carambola Tarts (Star Fruit)

Carambola (Star Fruit) Tarts
an original recipe by Vicky Wells

You may have seen Carambola (more commonly known as Star Fruit because of it’s star-like shape when sliced) in your local grocery store and wondered what to do with it.

Well, I had always wondered as well. Previously I had bought one or two and just sliced them and ate them raw, like I would just about any fruit. They have a rather mild, but slight acidic taste somewhat reminiscent of gooseberries. But, I’m afraid I wasn’t that impressed initially.

Friends of ours in Eleuthera, Bahamas have a huge Carambola tree on their property. On one visit they had an over abundance of fruit and offered us quite a large quantity.

My first thought was perhaps to make a jam with them, but then I considered the idea that, perhaps, they would make nice tarts. Read more…

Recipe for Piña Colada Baked Custard

Piña Colada Baked Custard
an original recipe by Vicky Wells

This recipe is a tropical twist on an old favourite.

We enjoy the fresh tropical fruits that are available, and even grow in our garden, on the island of Eleuthera in the Bahamas. So, developing a favourite recipe into one that included some of these tasty treats was just a natural progression of the experimentation that I love to do with any of my recipes.

Here’s how to do it. Enjoy! Read more…

Recipe for Green Papaya Medley

Green Papaya Medley
an original recipe by Vicky Wells

Papaya, also known as PawPaw, grows like a weed in our garden in Eleuthera. So, we tend to get an overabundance and found that we like it much better as a vegetable than as a fruit. Most people recognize ripe papaya as having orange flesh and brown seeds. However, when the it’s still green, the flesh is white and the seeds are black. You may be able to find green papaya in some grocery stores, but you’re more likely to find the ripe fruit.

We pick ones to use as vegetables while they are still green and make this tasty medley.

Here’s how we like to prepare it. Read more…

How to maximize your timeshare investment

I like timeshare. My wife and I own several weeks and we have enjoyed many vacations at resorts around the world. But unless you do some planning the experience will not be as rosy as the salesperson will lead you to believe.

It all starts even before the sales presentation. You are on vacation and someone on the street approaches you with an offer of money, or free tickets to some local attraction, or free meal at a special restaurant. You could also be attracted by highway signs for discount tickets or by offers from vendors in tourist oriented shops.

The size of the offer is what the timeshare company is willing to pay to get the chance to pitch their product to you. It will often vary with the amount of competition in the area. Also what you are offered may increase if you show some reluctance - so don’t be too quick to accept the first deal. Read more…

$10,000 House - The Movie

A lot of people were curious about the type of house and the community where many properties are available for under $10,000 that  I referred to in my post last week. To answer this question I put together a slide show of the area that you can check out on YouTube. Part one is mostly the town and part two is mostly the spectacular scenery all around us. I’ve also put a High Definition version on Vimeo. If you have a reasonably fast connection this is the one to watch so you can really appreciate the magnificent views.

Charge your next house to your credit card

Of course unless you have a platinum card you will need to find a place where housing is very inexpensive.

I know a place that is virtually crime free, where traffic jams are something you see on TV and the air is as clean as it was two hundred years ago. Read more…
