"The beaches of Eleuthera are, quite simply, FABULOUS!"

The Elusive Beaches of Eleuthera - pdf Edition

Carry a copy on your
iPad or laptop

For more than 10 years "The Elusive Beaches of Eleuthera" has been a MUST HAVE purchase for visitors to Eleuthera. The print version is available from all the hotels and gift shops on the island. Many rental cottages include a copy with their information packages.

As more people now travel with laptops and iPads we have received requests to make electronic versions of our book available for download. So here is your exclusive opportunity to purchase "The Elusive Beaches of Eleuthera" in pdf format.

Much of the shoreline of this 110-mile long Bahamian out-island is beach. Unfortunately, access to many of these beaches is limited. Most of the access roads are nothing more than just tracks cut through the bush by local farmers. Sometimes the roads may be part of a subdivision and may even be paved but often you'll find that they are overgrown.

In the last few years the Bahamian Tourism Department has posted a few "Beach Access" signs on the island. The only problem is, once you get off the main road, there are no more signs and you might never find the beach.

The Elusive Beaches of Eleuthera gives you precise directions to over 50 beaches that include:

  • distances from local landmarks
  • warnings about road conditions and the type of vehicle you will need to negotiate them
  • GPS (Global Positioning System) readings for each turn you make off the Queens Highway and where each access road meets the beach

The authors have personally inspected every beach and rated each one in several useful categories:

Access
  • Condition of the road
  • Type of vehicle you're likely to need

Privacy
  • Are you likely to have the beach all to yourself

Swimming
  • Is the water rough? calm? shallow? deep?

Snorkeling
  • Are there things to see if you snorkel here?

Beachcombing
  • Are you likely to find shells and other items on the beach?

Praise for The Elusive Beaches of Eleuthera

Lonely Plant Guide to the Bahamas, 3rd Edition, had the following to say:

The Elusive Beaches of Eleuthera by Geoff & Vicky Wells is a little handbook that these self-described 'beachologists' have compiled with sincere devotion to the art of beach-bumming. Every beach on the island is awarded scores for ease of access, privacy, swimming, snorkeling and shelling. Directions and a brief description of each of these little bits of paradise accompany the scorecards. Beg, borrow or steal one of these books when you arrive, or contact these clever people yourself. --3rd Edition Lonely Planet Guide to The Bahamas

You allowed us to discover so many nice beaches. Without your book our holidays would have been very different. We would not have found all those beaches. We were always impressed to discover a small paradise at the end of a dirt road.

If you are planning a trip to Eleuthera, you need this book.

We just returned from a week in Eleuthera and this book was our bible. There would have been NO WAY to find all the fantastic beaches without it. Eleuthera is raw and beautiful. To find most places you need references to landmarks, which this book has. Again, I cannot stress enough how important this book was to our understanding all that Eleuthera had to offer.

If you ever want to get away from it all ... where you are trading the finer things in life for the exquisite beauty of nature, you MUST have this book. And, since you are not visiting Eleuthera because of its robust economy, friendly people, and state-of-the art accommodations (read here a whole lot of sarcasm), this book will allow you to explore areas you didn't believe existed on Earth. Without the book, you are hopeless in finding these beaches. With the book, you MAY find most of them.

For an upcoming 2-week trip to Eleuthera, I bought this book after many recommendations. Yes, it has great beach reviews of the whole island (which is LONG and narrow), but a map would have made it much, much better.

We have a house in Eleuthera and both we, and many local residents, highly recommend this book for tourists and repeat visitors alike. While you can find a number of beaches on Eleuthera just by turning off Queen's Highway (the main road), if you truly want to explore the island, this book, with its numerous listings and handy GPS coordinates streamlines the approach. The design of the book leaves a lot to be desired, but the amount of info it contains in one easy location is a true plus - especially in an area where internet and cell phone access can be very sketchy. As one reviewer notes, it does contain ads. Some will find this cheesy or annoying, others have found it convenient when looking for a local restaurant or dive shop on an island with few maps and signposts. I also thought the listing of local clinics, banks and gas stations with phone numbers was a real plus (especially as many don't have signs or regular hours).

This book includes written descriptions of about 50 beaches, some with color photos, and is helpful. The book rates each beach according to access, privacy, swimming, snorkeling and beachcombing. There is also information on Eleuthera gas stations, banks, doctors and clinics, individual settlements, a few restaurants. Quite a few island shops have purchased ads (some with photos) adding a little more info. It will be in my bag when we fly to Governor's Harbor next week.

Would have been lost without it.

I did have a copy of the earlier edition of this book and always found it invaluable when trying to locate some of the very special beaches on Eleuthera. I bought this edition in preparation for a trip with a friend and found this edition to be every bit as valuable. The books directions are right on and the ratings (swimming, privacy, snorkeling, shelling, accessibility) seem accurate and allow one to really narrow down the choices.

Without this book my friend and I would never have found our way to Preachers Cave and it's nearby beach, Lighthouse Point Beach (not to be missed), Ten Bay and Double Bay (both beautiful). She and I were looking for swimming / snorkeling beaches. On an earlier trip with my nephew he and I used the book to find some really good shelling beaches - his particular interest.

I know of no other way (except asking the locals) to find your way to some of these beaches. Many of them are truly off the beaten path.

A big thank you to the authors for helping to make my latest trip a memorable one.
